Cut Through The Personal Branding Clutter - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Cut Through The Personal Branding Clutter - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Have it your way. Talk all you want. Converse on Twitter. I do it too. But at the end of the day, results speak for themselves. Networking by conversing on Twitter is plain and simple, a terrible way to network. Look at the top people on Twitter based on followers. The majority of them have created real-life tangible results that are changing the world. Are they using Twitter the same way you are? Information overload Everywhere I turn these days, I am inundated with advertising. Everybody wants my attention. Brands try to reach me on television, online, when Im on the bus, listening to the radio, and even when Im working out in the gym. Lately, Ive been swarmed by personal branding. When Im on Twitter, I feel like a Ive walked in to a storm of terrible personal branding. Everybody has a platform, wants to be heard, and yells in my ear. Its like coming to a party where theres no host, everybodys screaming, and the only thing that matters is what kind of car you drive, or in Twitters case, how many followers youve amassed. I could talk for hours about my wrestle with Twitter. Is it worth my time if Im trying to have an information-light diet? Is there a real ROI? What is the value if almost everyone on there is selfish and I dont have any real experiences with 99% of my followers? As Alana Taylor puts it, Twitter satisfies the selfishness of being famous, the greed of wanting instant results, the need to speak and be heard, the freedom and equality in being able to take part in a conversation no matter your economic or social status. So, if everyone is on Twitter for their own benefit, then is there an extremely attractive ROI from it? I think there are other ways to build your brand in a more tangible and meaningful way. Its one that may not garner you Twitter followers, but its one that will expand your network of people who have had more memorable experiences that cut through the clutter of noise on the web. Network by doing What a concept! It speaks for itself, but its simplicity is the core of its power. By getting involved and taking action, you will create incredible relationships that have amazing value. The relationships you can create by taking action will far exceed any Twitter relationship you can make. What are some ways to make this happen? Get involved politically Create cross-company initiatives Go to lunch with people across your organization Do philanthropy work Join a professional organization in your area Find a hobby By all means, if you can think of other ways you can network by doing, then please voice up. We need a generation of doers not a generation of big talk. This is the real networking. Its the kind that will build lifelong relationships, and allow you to connect with people who will help you out at the drop of a dime. On the Job by Anita Bruzzese How to Fix Chaotic Teams
On the Job by Anita Bruzzese How to Fix Chaotic Teams Many companies find that teams are important because the collective intelligence of the group can drive more innovative, creative and strategic results. Unfortunately, sometimes a teams collective intelligence seems to go awry and instead leads to chaos, back-biting, failure and threats of bodily harm. Such results are not desirable, of course, but thats what can happen when teams dont keep things simple. Byreducing complexity, teams are better positioned to achieve desired results with greater efficiency (and less bloodshed). Here are some ways that teams can reduce complexity: Establish clear goals. Teams need to avoid the kitchen-sink approach of trying to be everything to everyone. Christopher Avery, author of Teamwork is an Individual Skill, advocates that each team member must agree on the shared purpose of why the team exists and what it wants to accomplish. When groups pursue a direction determined by majority or authority, those who dissent (either vocally or silently) can lose energy, he says. He suggests asking, How can we change this proposal so that it works for you? as a way toreach a clear goalthat gets the buy-in of everyone. Jon R. Katzenbach and Douglas K. Smith have written about what makes good teams work, and they note in theHarvard Business Reviewthat the best operating teams also translate their common purpose into specific performance goals, such as reducing the reject rate from suppliers by 50% or increasing the math scores of graduates from 40% to 95%. Get rid of a wish list. If its key, keep it. If not, get rid of it. Having too many things on a teams plate can be demoralizing when all the objectives cant be achieved. Dont make assumptions. Just because a team worked well one time in one situation does not mean that team will be similarly successful the (read more here)

How to Spot a Toxic Individual and Find the Courage To Walk Away Quickly - Kathy Caprino
How to Spot a Toxic Individual and Find the Courage To Walk Away Quickly One enormous benefit of working with thousands of people each year is that you learn to detect in 10 minutes or less an enormous amount about people â" their energy, how they operate in the world, their sense of entitlement, generosity and consideration (or lack thereof), boundaries, degree of self-love, values, worldview and much more. In my line of work, where hundreds of strangers reach out on the phone or online to connect, I have had to develop the capability to discern who I want to move forward with, and who I need to walk away from quickly, in order to protect myself, my time and my energy. If I fall down on that, I suffer, as do my family, colleagues and clients (and my health and well-being). Iâve learned to see the red flag warning signs of behaviors I know I need to walk away from, and my list of warning signs might be of help to you too. I need to add that even though I walk away from these toxic individuals without guilt or shame, I endeavor to access love in my heart and deep compassion for them. Iâm not cruel, harsh or dismissive (at least I try not to be), but Iâm as respectful as I can be. I realize that were all doing the best we can every day. But I do know where I end and they begin, and I know when itâs time to end our connection, and fast. Below are the top 3 signs that help me know when Iâm dealing with a toxic individual, and when to walk away: 1) Itâs all about them Iâm astounded by people who call me at all hours of the day and night, without a thought to ask for an invitation to talk about their struggles. They launch right in, not checking in if itâs a good time to talk, and itâs all about them. These types of people are chronically unhappy, stuck in feeling victimized, lacking in awareness of the impact of their own actions and words and that they are co-creating their problems. Theyâre often angry, frustrated and highly critical of others, and feel that their problems deserve immediate attention, without regard for the world around them. In other words, they believe that their urgency is your emergency. Anyone who thinks that life is all about them and that their problems are more important or pressing than anyone elseâs needs a wake-up call. But the truth is you donât have to be the one to deliver that call. Walk away. 2) They have no regard for your boundaries In my work as a therapist, Iâve connected with many folks with serious psychological disorders, including severe personality disorders. One such disorder is labeled âborderline personality disorder,â and while Im not a fan of labels, the hallmarks of this disorder are apparent: there is total lack of personal boundaries, and complete disregard for othersâ boundaries. Itâs virtually impossible to build a positive, mutually-supportive relationship with people who disregard or violate your boundaries, who wonât take no for an answer, and who dont t even recognize when theyâre walking all over you. Take a look today at the people in your life â" do they respect your boundaries? Do they act appropriately and honor when you assert yourself and say âYesâ or âNo?â Or do they continually demand of you what youâre not comfortable to give and what you have said you would not give? Your boundaries are the invisible barriers that separate you from the world around you. They define who you are, and keep you safe and secure, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Having well-developed boundaries ensures that you are shielded from behaviors and actions that are injurious, disrespectful and invasive. Those with healthy boundaries know their limits and are able to express themselves with quiet strength and authority. Those with unhealthy boundaries push and pull on you in uncomfortable or aggressive ways, and donât know when to stop. They canât regulate their behaviors or language to honor and respect the boundaries of others. Who is trampling on your boundaries today? (BTW, If you have a narcissistic boss who is treating you terribly, check out my Forbes post on How to Tell If Your Boss Is a Narcissist And 5 Ways to Avoid Getting Fired By One.) 3) Thereâs no grace, kindness or appreciation Iâm always pleasantly surprised when I speak to a stranger or potential new client or colleague, and they connect with grace, generosity, kindness and appreciation. Itâs a beautiful thing â" to be greeted by a gentle voice, a kind, open heart, and sincere appreciation for what you do and who you are. The flip side of this is when people engage with you in ways that are brusque, inconsiderate, demanding, or disrespectful. Givers â" who approach life with a generous, giving mindset â" are a true blessing in our lives. Insincere, self-absorbed takers, on the other hand, who are always looking for âwhatâs in it for meâ and critically demand of you more than is fair, appropriate or realistic, need to be led out the door of your life. How do you walk away from a toxic potential client or partner youâve just met? Here are a few key tips: 1) Be kind and courteous, but make it clear that an engagement or partnership with this individual or his/her business isnât a good fit for you at this time 2) Be honest â" explain what an ideal partnership looks like and why this isnât it 3) Be BOLD â" Thank them for their time, but explain that you have a set of non-negotiables and standards of integrity that you live by. With love in your heart, share that these non-negotiables are just that â" immutable rules that help you thrive. Explain your feeling that your non-negotiables would most likely not be honored in this arrangement, and for that reason, youâd like to leave things as they are and part ways. Whoâs toxic in your life right now? What bold, candid conversation do you need to have today to protect yourself from narcissistic, demanding takers and self-absorbed individuals who canât or wonât respect or appreciate you?
